The community service was officially opened by the Chair of Nurul Jadid Foundation Hufni Maulana. In his welcoming remarks, he revealed his excitement welcoming the Polnep team to conduct a training in his school, particularly an activity which is in accordance with the needs of the institution. Moreover, he said that pondok pesantren students must own broad insight and proper skill in life, one of them in agriculture sector. âSince not all of us will have the opportunity to preach to people, if that happens we still have the chance to do other activities which would bring benefits to society,â he added.
Meanwhile, the head of Agricultural Technology Department of Polnep Ledy Purwandani stated that the main activities of community service conducted at Pondok Pesantren Nurul Jadid consisted of training on how to empower unproductive land owned by Pondok Pesantren Nurul Jadid; plant cultivation (sugar cane, corn, and elephant grass); and how to produce forage for livestock from organic material contained in crop waste (sugar cane waste and corn husks).
Furthermore, she explained the activity aimed to help students of Pondok Pesantren Nurul Jadid boost the productivity of their land. âAs so far, Pondok Pesantren Nurul Jadid utilizes its land only for goat farming, whilst they leave around 5 hectares of their land unproductive. In addition, through this training, we hope we could give new insight and knowledge on how to increase land productivity via crop cultivation and produce forage for livestock,â Ledy Purwandani said. In the training, participants were trained to make forage by fermenting organic material using Effective Microorganism-4 (EM4) which is specific for livestock.
