FISHERIES AND MARINE SCIENCES DEPARTMENT OF POLNEP CONDUCTS RESEARCH IN SEKABUK VILLAGE (A PART OF CITRES NET-NORHED PROGRAM)

Pontianak State Polytechnic (Polnep) had a collaboration with Lembaga Pengembangan Masyarakat Swadaya dan Mandiri (Gemawan) and Lembaga Desa Pengelola Hutan (LDPH) of Sekapuk Village, Mempawah Regency in developing sustainable fish farming as an effort to strengthen community participation-based land and forest management.
The activity conducted on Saturday July 30, 2022, in the forest area of Sekabuk Village and attended by Village Administrative Officers, Mempawah Forest Management Office, and students of Polnep. This activity is one of realization of Tri Darma Perguruan Tinggi (Three Pillars of Higher Education).
“We come here to perform our research and community service which aim to boost community participation in harnessing water resource potential in Sekabuk Village, especially for fish farming of endemic freshwater fish,” said the Head of Research Team Sarmila, who is also a lecturer in Polnep. She added saying that the activity was funded by the 2020 CitRes.Net-NORHED II Program.
The team comprises Sri Warastuti, Uray Endang, Farid Mudlodaf, Kristina Novalina, Hylda Khairah Putri, Aria Gusdi, Agnes Maulidia, Fina, two students of Fish Farming Study Program of Polnep (Dwinatas Natas and Mira) and one student of Architecture Study Program of Polnep (Ujang Jakaria). At that activity, Sarmila and her team succeeded to collect and identify some fish, such as Lais, Kebali, Runtuk, Snakehead, Baung, Biawan, Giant Prawn, and several others of freshwater fish.
Collaboration, cooperation, and community participation are essential in harnessing and managing resources related to social forestry. Gemawan, as one of organizations which concerns with environment and community empowerment, constantly attempts to cooperate and collaborate with various parties, including academic communities, to help people develop their potential,” said Gemawan’s Coordinator for Community Organizer Lani Ardiansyah.
Moreover, Lani said that Sekabuk Village had big potential which is worthy to be developed together with its local people. “Fish farming like what we are currently doing with Polnep is one of efforts we take to boost local food production,” Lani added.
Meanwhile, the Head of Sekabuk Village Andas Saputra warmly welcomed the program which conducted in his area. “It is an honor for our village to have this activity. We highly hope this program could generate positive impacts to our people and environment, which one of them is to help us increase our economy,” he said.
