State Polytechnic of Pontianak (POLNEP) stands on an area of 6.3 hectare based on the Decree of Director Genaral of Higher Education number: 80/DIKTI/KEP/1985.

Initially, POLNEP was known as Politeknik Universitas Tanjungpura (Polytechnic of Tanjungpura University) which only had 3 departments, to wit:
(a) Department of Civil Engineering,
(b) Department of Mechanical Engineering, and
(c) Department of Electronic Engineering.

In 1994, Department of Business was open with its first two study programs were Accounting and Administration; and Office Administration (Later on in 1997, those 2 study programs transformed into 2 new departments: Accounting and Business Administration). In 1988, POLNEP gained its full autonomy status and changed its name into State Polytechnic of Pontianak, based on the Decree of Minister of National Education dated 27 April 1997 number: 079/0/1997. The date of the decree became the birth date of POLNEP. Next, in 1999, Department of Agricultural Technology was open with its first study program Diploma 3 on Plantation Product Processing Technology.

In 2002, POLNEP opened new Department of Fisheries and Marine Sciences with its first study program Diploma 3 on Fish Farming Technology. Then in 2003, new study programs of Fishing Technology and Fish Processing Technology were open. Later, in 2007, a new study program of Diploma 3 on Electronics Engineering was open.

Next, in 2008, POLNEP opened new study programs of Diploma 4 on Housing Planning and Settlement Engineering; Governmental Agencies Administration; and Public Sector Accounting. Then, a new study program of Diploma 1 on Operator and Maintenance of Heavy Equipment was opened back in 2010.

Furthermore, in 2013, Polnep opened one more new study program of Diploma 4 on Mechanical Engineering followed by 2 new study programs of Diploma 4 on Plantation Management and Plantation Crops Cultivation. Lastly, on December 2015, two new study programs were opened, to wit: Diploma 4 on Building Architecture and Diploma 4 on Built-Up Area Design.

In addition to providing regular classes, Pontianak State Polytechnic also organizes Outside Domicile Study Programs (PDD). Starting in 2012 in Singkawang, two study programs of Diploma II on Informatics Engineering and Plantation Products Processing Technology were established. The following year, in 2013, two more D II programs were opened - Mechanical Engineering and Plantation Product Processing Technology, this time in Polewali Mandar Regency, West Sulawesi. The latest one, in 2015, one more PDD was established in Kapuas Hulu Regency. It offers 3 D III programs in Civil Engineering, Fish Farming Technology, and Plantation Product Processing Technology.

Currently, Pontianak State Polytechnic has 8 departments consisting of 8 Diploma IV programs, 15 Diploma III programs, 4 Diploma II programs, and 1 Diploma I program. The highest accreditation status of the programs available is A level of accreditation. Each study program along with all Polnep communities have shared common commitment to provide best services to the students and other stakeholders in order to produce qualified and responsible graduates who are able to give significant contribution to advance national competitiveness. 

State Polytechnic of Pontianak itself is a vocational higher education system which focuses on science and technology mastery and development in order to support the era of industrialization.
